I need your opinion ...

Hmmm ... how do I even start this one?

I had a conversation with a friend recently about the word "crap" - whether or not it is a bad word or a swear word. Before I give you more details, I want your opinion.

You can either take the poll to the left, or put a comment in saying your thoughts. If you put a comment in, please say what area of the US you live (general is fine - NE, NW, SE, SW or Central). Obviously, if you live outside the US, I would love to hear that, too :)

to be continued ...

  1. I do not think it is an actual swear word but I personally dislike it and find it a very crass word. I was raised in the SW and have lived many years in the MW.

I'll be eager to see the responses you get :o)

  2. You're causing me to really ponder this one more. I strongly dislike 'bad language' & 4-letter words. I have to say that I do use this word a lot though. I don't think of it as a bad word really...more like, crud...shucks, or shoot...hmmm...I'm curious to hear more comments. (I wish you had a 'unsure' button or 'almost')...ha ha...I haven't voted yet...cuz now you got me really thinkin...plus, I looked up the definition of the word online...I'm still on the fence.

  3. My stepmom used to tell us kids we weren't allowed to say that word b/c she considered it a bad word. My mom, however, didn't care. (But then again, she used all kinds of bad words herself except the F word.) So, when we were around stepmom we didn't say it. But now, like Heidi, I do say it from time to time. I don't think it has nearly the same connotation as saying the S word. It's all about cultural perception. If the culture/town/city/whatever you were raised in says it's a bad word, well then maybe it's a bad word to you. But even the FCC has regulations about what's okay to put on broadcast tv or not (I realize they are more lax on that these days than in years past though).
Now, as far as my kids go, I would prefer them not to say crap, but if it slips out every once in a great while, it's not that big of a deal.
    Just my two cents.
ps - i grew up in Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Oregon.

  4. hmmm...not a word I use often at all...a bit crude, and can be replaced w/ other less offensive words...as far as an actual swear word...I don't think so as I think those refer to God/Jesus

I didn't vote either, and was raised in PA. :-)

  5. I think it is a bad word because it replaces another word that starts with sh. Like the word it replaces, it is a very crude word even if it is not bad unless used in proper context.

Born and raised in south AL. ROLL TIDE!!!

  6. I personally don't use the word, or care for it. I think there are better words that can be used.

  7. It is somewhat difficult to find definitions of slang. To me there are other words that can describe the situation or thing that is referred to by 'crap'. Yes, I am guilty of slipping the word out handful of time in my life. I don't necessarily think of it as a swear word. But, I guess it all depends on the context the word is being used. It does get you thinking though. Good one.

  8. I haven't visited blogs in a long while (haven't blogged since March, either), but was searching out yours to catch up because yours was always one of my favorites.

I know this survey was a while back, but I wanted to put my 2cents in.

I hate hearing this word. I think there are so many better words that could be used. It also signifies a mood that doesn't seem very happy or content!!! My son uses this word ALL of the time. If he drops something and says "crap!", I can handle that, but I really hate if he says "Oh my Crap!".

Altho I live in GA now, I grew up in PA & NY where I always said "Shoot!" :)
